And it's not just for back-packers
Though not usually associated with luxury travel, La Tomatina features high on the list of bucket-list activities. thisisvalencia.com offers a way of experiencing the festivities that, while not the height of luxury, comes close to it, and attracts a more discerning visitor. La Tomatina takes place on the last Wednesday of August - this year it falls on the 28th August.

We take our guests to the Village of Buñol, where the food fight takes place. The tour includes an official wristband, issued by the town, that guarantees entry to the 'fight-zone'. After the fight, and a clean-up by the coach, it's on to a country leisure centre for showers, a swim, a delicious Valencian Paella with tapas, sangria and wine, followed by a relax by the pool. For the more energetic there is tennis, padel and even football. Then it's back to Valencia early evening and an optional Sunset catamaran tour and Discotheque.

The Tomatina tour costs just 75€ including lunch, swim and unlimited booze. There is an additional 10€ entry tax, newly imposed for 2013 by the town hall of Buñol.

Buñol 29 August 2012
thisisivalencia.com played host to 220 fun-loving tourists from all corners of the earth for their sixth day-trip to the world's messiest and biggest food festival - namely La Tomatina. We had guests from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Korea, USA, the UK, Ireland, Holland, France, Finland, China and Belgium. All wanting to get in there and throw tomatoes. We poduced a commemorative tee-shirt for the day, which soon became one of the most photographed tees of the day. It was so popular we have produced an extra limited quantity for sale on-line at a measly 10€ plus Post and Packaging. Details are here. And there are loads more pictures on our facebookgooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-60470560194174189542012-08-18T12:20:00.000+02:002012-08-18T12:20:39.001+02:00La Tomatina, an hour of madness in a sleepy Valencian village.

The little village of Buñol wouldn't normally appear on anyone's tourist agenda when they are visiting this part of Valencia. It is a sleepy little agricultural village populated mainly by farmers and people who work in the enormous cement works that you see from the motorway as you pass the Buñol exit. There is a Moorish castle, caves, a river and a small lake that is used for swimming in the summer.
But Buñol is internationally famous for being on most people's 'bucket list' of things to do before they die, because Buñol holds annually, what is surely the world's biggest and messiest food fight. It has grown into one of the most popular bucket list events of the world, up there with Oktoberfest and Bull-running in Pamplona. Each year a growing number of visitors arrive in Spain to cram themselves into the very small main square and centre of the village to throw tomatoes at each other. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just back-packers who want to do it, over the years we have been running our day-trip from Valencia, we have seen all ages and people from all walks of life and countries.
One thing that never ceases to amaze us is how little people who come to take part, know about it.
First is Buñol's location, the village is about a half-an-hour's drive from the centre of Valencia, Spain's third largest city - many people fly into Madrid or Barcelona and are surprised to learn that it is a three hour drive from there.
Second is the duration of the fight, It is an hour long - it begins and ends with a canon shot. Every year as we walk back up the hill after it's all over, we meet dozens of happy revelers walking down the hill, many in elaborate fancy dress, blissfully unaware that it's all over and they have missed the most important part of the day.
The wonderful thing about La Tomatina is that it is so uncommercial. It is part of the village's week-long Fiestas Patronales (these fiestas take place all over Spain throughout the year, in the community of Valencia alone there are said to be over 350 a year) and La Tomatina is just a day that forms part of the celebrations. Consequently, it is free to enter the fray, drinks and food and souvenirs are offered for sale at extremely low prices by the bars and even some households. There are families on the walk down to the heart of the village who will give your belongings safe haven for a very small fee while you throw tomatoes, and when it's all over villagers all along the route out will hose you down and help you get clean outside their front doors, just for the fun of it.
A few years ago we had a director of a bank in Chicago who had flown over just to 'do La Tomatina' on our tour. He had the time of his life but was stunned that the big names hadn't got in and 'sponsored' the fun out of it. 'If this took place in the States,' he said, 'The only drinks on sale would be a cola brand, the only food a burger brand, you would be charged to enter the village, but only after you had signed a legal waiver. Official merchandising would be on offer but would be twice the price and at the end of it all you'd be obliged by the organisers to clean up using official showers which would, of course, cost you money!' Some of this is borne out by a visit to Reno's (Nevada, USA) web page for its copy of La Tomatina, which charges an admission fee and insists on a signed waiver...
Talking of copies, there are La Tomatinas now in India too, following its appearance in a Bollywood blockbuster, which was interestingly, filmed in Buñol, but was a specially staged version, filmed earlier that year.
La Tomatina is a great thing to take part in, it is all such good clean, dirty, fun. But it is in danger of being over subscribed. Last year there were an estimated in excess of 40,000 taking part. The village cannot be enlarged for the event.
If you are coming to La Tomatina here in Buñol, please remember that there are rules that so far have ensured that there have been no serious accidents, no mean feat considering the number of people crammed into such a small space in the extreme heat that is a given each year at La Tomatina, and the fact that large lorries pass through the crush. The Spanish are thought of as pretty lawless, but in fact, they stick to rules, once the canon signals the end of the fight, for example, they stop.
The rules published by the town hall of Buñol are simple, they follow, verbatim below:
RULES & TIPS FOR ENJOYMENT
The City Hall of Buñol has prepared a list of rules which will ensure that the Tomatina remains a celebration. These simple rules of civic responsibility and cohabitation are important for the festival to develop as usual, without any problem:
· You must not bring bottles or other type of objects which could cause an accident.
· You must not break(knot) or throw T-shirts.
· The tomatos must be squashed before throwing them, to avoid hurting people.
· You must be careful of any lorry.
· When you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatos.
thisisvalencia.com offer a tour to La Tomatina each year, which includes travel to and from La Tomatina, and on the way back, showers, a swim and a paella lunch in a country restaurant and pool. It is a great way to enjoy the festival and your valuables are kept securely on the coach while you enjoy yourselves.

It is really quite strange to be living in a city that still, even in this time of crisis, keeps most of its treasures a secret from the rest of the world.
The city? Valencia.
When we first moved here some 13 years ago, people would ask us what country the city was in - Italy? Even now, the ignorance concerning the city and what it has to offer is incredible. Friends, family and tourists who visit for the first time are amazed when they see the architecture - both ultra-modern and ancient, the parks and the beaches. Most people now know the city for the America's Cup, which the city hosted in 2007 and 2009, for the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix and to a lesser extent the Moto GP, held at the racecourse in Cheste, a few mile from the city centre. These events bring visitors, a lot of them, but they hardly see the city as they are only here for the event.
La Tomatina is on a huge number of 'bucket lists' of people from all corners of the world. It is a massive food fight which takes place over a period of one hour in the village of Buñol, half-an-hour's drive from the city centre. It is probably the world's best known event, bat ask most people the city it is closest to and they will tell you Madrid or Barcelona - most people travel to on oof these two coties for the event, only to find they have to take a bus or a train to Valencia to get there.
Valencia has an official tourist office, but they seem to be only interested in the home market. La Tomatina is annually a huge opportunity to bring in an enormous quantity of tourists and show them a good time for at least a few days. Most revellers arrive late the night before La Tomatina and leave the city the same night or the morning after because they just don't know.
La Tomatina is fun, but for the mother of all Fiestas, you need to visit Valencia in March for Las Fallas, chances are you won't have heard of that either. It's a truly unique three-week-long extravaganza which takes over the city and the surrounding villages and takes place each year between the first to the 20th of March each year. Though the number of visitors from abroad is increasing, there are nothing like the foreign visitors who fly in for a half-an-hour of messy fun in August, Las Fallas is not as messy but is more than enough fun for any visitor. It has everything - Fireworks both day and night, Monuments, huge and made of papier Machè, so that they burn on the night of the 19th, parades for children, parades of fire, parties in the street, dancing, concerts and more.
The rest of the year? Come for the beauty to the city, for its wonderful park that was once a river, some 10 kilometres of green space bordering the city and containing parkland, sports fields, a music palace, an opera house, a science museum, a children's park in the shape of Gulliver, a zoo, an aquarium and dolpinarium, running tracks, gardens and beautiful bridges. Come and see the Holy Grail in the cathedral, come for the architecture, come for Europe's biggest Central Market, come for the shopping and for the eating and for the art galleries.
There is so much to see and do. http://thisisvalencia.com
There will be a presentation of the book "I was muixeranguera" Enric Lluch, part of the New Muixeranga Algemesíof. The performance will also include muixeranguer storytelling, performances and drums of Algemesí widgets, the Red Benimaclet Estrela, and many more surprises.
gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-32784807309082000562012-06-15T17:53:00.001+02:002012-06-15T17:53:46.201+02:00Time to close the bridge again.

Formula One is back in town, The Valencia Street Circuit is being put back together again for this year's Spanish Grand Prix. In a few days the bridge that completes the circuit and blocks the Marina will swing across for what may be the last Formula One Grand Prix in this fair city of ours. There are strong rumours that we will not, after all, be alternating with Barcelona in the coming years. But I suppose we'll just have to see.gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-36560037409995200722012-06-15T17:46:00.000+02:002012-06-15T17:46:19.334+02:00The Night of San Juan in Valencia
If you're here for the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit. Make sure you get down to the beach on Saturday night. It is Noche de San Juan - you could be fooled into thinking that the entire population of Valencia is on the beach burning their old furniture. This is the shortest night of the year and to celebrate, a huge beach party takes place, the bonfires are used to cook food, a lot of drink is consumed, adn then, at midnight everyone runs to the sea to jump nine waves (for Luck! What else?) and then they run back to their fires where the proceed to jump them and throw bits of paper into the flames. The paper has written on it the things that were bad in the previous 12 months and good wishes for the coming year. It's also a jolly good way of drying off, if you're careful!
The party and the fires fizzle out in the early hours, and by morning, you wouldn't know there had been a party, so well have the beaches been cleaned.
San Juan takes place on beaches all over the Mediterranean.
gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-12893169172282813332012-06-14T16:00:00.002+02:002012-06-14T17:05:25.303+02:00FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE CINE DE VALENCIA CINEMA JOVE
15 - 22 June 2012. Various locations around the city

The Cinema Jove International Film Festival embarks on a new era and includes in its new name the city that proudly hosts it; hence we have: Valencia International Film Festival Cinema Jove. However, the spirit which has characterised the 26 preceding festivals is still very much alive and continues to stimulate the festival content. This spirit has forged a place for the festival among the most important specialised festivals in Spain (in a country that runs over 200 film festivals) and it has become a reference European festival that is known the world over.
Cinema Jove has a consolidated identity and has maintained coherence throughout its history; so much so, that it is clearly recognised by a considerable part of the general public and the media and has earned for itself the approval of both.
The Festival is still envisaged as a meeting point for filmmakers from all corners of the globe; at the same time it is a platform for new talent and a laboratory for the plethora of new trends in the international film scene.
Cinema Jove is recognised by the International Federation of Associations of Film Producers (FIAPF) as a specialised film festival with an international ranking that is geared towards film professionals, and which is always in search of new and brilliant filmmakers.
Today, in the saturated world film festival scene, (in Europe alone, there are over 7,000), the FIAPF accreditation represents a hallmark of quality; it lets professionals from around the globe know that it meets the quality requisites through which FIAPF regulates this abundance of festivals. Cinema Jove has had this accreditation for more than a decade.
Cinema Jove has, over its last 26 editions, served as a platform to launch new filmmakers. A huge number of directors with a myriad of nationalities have taken part and many of their names shine among the most important and prestigious in today’s film industry. Many of these were discovered by participating in Cinema Jove; either they were competing in the official categories (both in the feature film and short film categories), or they were the object of retrospective screenings. These creators would often find themselves, in a relatively short time, winning prestigious prizes at the world’s top festivals: Cannes, Berlin, Venice, as well as at the top film events: The Goya awards, The European Film Academy Prizes and the American Independent Spirit Awards, and… even at the Oscars.
The Valencia International Film Festival Cinema Jove takes place from 15 - 22 June at various locations around the city of Valencia and the program follows below.
Celebrations take place this weekend in Plaza de la Virgen, Valencia, of an ancient rite, namely Corpus Christi. Giants and floats, some of them dating back several centuries will be part of a weekend of performance and procession. The momas will perform plays and there will be music too. Pictured here are images from the 2007 Corpus Celebrations in the Plaza. It is unlikely that this year you will see some of the 'ethnic' giants, as there is some argument between the Town Hall and the private owners of the giants over funding.gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-69462656594458430762012-05-31T12:46:00.002+02:002012-05-31T12:46:36.344+02:00HAVING WORDS IN THE BEDROOM

One of the Thisisvalencia team had to fly to Barcelona from France on Tuesday - this is what terminal T1 looked like.
It seems that after the successful strike in Terminal T2 Barcelona-El Prat airport last week, the cleaners did it again, moving the action this time to Terminal T1. About 280 workers were protesting against the change in working conditions in Vareser the company responsible for the cleaning of Barcelona Airport. Specific claims by the staff include non-payment of public holidays, holiday shifts working conditions not applying to new hires, and wages.gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-68823014449795550052012-05-31T11:41:00.000+02:002012-05-31T11:41:07.601+02:00HELLO AGAIN!!Wow! It was years before the days of computer aided design, so I worked with a pot of Cow Gum and a spreader, pasting little bits of paper with flights, times and destinations onto art-boards. A very tedious job.
A week later the printed timetables arrived and, to my horror, I realised I had pasted the incoming flights onto the outgoing pages and the outgoing on the incoming. Thanks to a very understanding printer, who allowed me to return the bad copies and reprinted the job correctly overnight, no one was any the wiser!
The designer of daily free newspaper ADN (Monday's edition) won't have been so lucky - as the paper hit the street with this wrongly captioned photo. (caption reads The Prince and Princess, with their daughter Leonor on 7 June last year in Madrid)
The Spanish Royal family can be very touchy in matters such as these!gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-23091721962471503312011-02-02T10:38:00.004+01:002011-02-02T10:50:57.028+01:00Jasper Johns at IVAM<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 399px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L6KZwAoHVnY/TUko8bTWRyI/AAAAAAAACPk/zHQGE1j9Ym8/s400/jasper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569027432806500130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_L6KZwAoHVnY/TUko8NVU3JI/AAAAAAAACPc/w3vgnrzM4IY/s400/Jasper-Johns.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569027429056699538" />
A Major retrospective of the works of Jasper Johns, many on public display for the first time, are on show at IVAM, Valencia's trailblazing modern art museum. About a hundred works, consisting of pieces that span fifty years of one of the most enthralling and hallowed careers in the world of contemporary art. It includes paintings from American and European museums (National Gallery of Art, Washington; MFAH, Houston; Whitney Museum, New York; The Broad Art Foundation, Santa Monica; Milwaukee Art Museum; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London, among others), and from private collections which show the evolution of an exceptional oeuvre. The presence of these works is completed by a substantial loan from the artist which includes, among other pieces, the largest sculpture that he has made, created in 2007 and never previously exhibited.
Many of the works – a mixture of all techniques – which feature in this exhibition focus on the numbers and letters that have appeared recurrently in his work during more than half a century. Symbols of non-verbal communication are present in his paintings, prints and sculptures. In a process based on repetition, the artist shows the importance of the constant development of thematic registers.
Jasper Johns was born in 1930, in Allendale, South Carolina. He is unquestionably one of the foremost artists in the world of contemporary art. He is a tireless searcher who from the outset reacted against Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism and remained faithful to a kind of aestheticism, drawing his inspiration from the history of art. Driving back the limits of art, he has included his own roots and those of humanity in his work, together with his knowledge and his fondness for the past. To quote a reflection made by an art historian, he is one of the last American painters who has retained “the aroma of the old Europe”. Jasper Johns is recognised now as an indisputable, emblematic figure of art, and his work, which played a decisive role in the birth of Pop Art and its consequences, also lies at the origin of many other innovations in the world of art.
Well worth a visit.gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-71507272013883024692010-10-10T22:08:00.007+02:002010-10-10T22:33:02.799+02:00TP 52 Worlds 2010<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L6KZwAoHVnY/TLIiE4EvcWI/AAAAAAAACO0/bQmAets4J9I/s400/tp521.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526517159904112994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_L6KZwAoHVnY/TLIiFJ_7O0I/AAAAAAAACO8/7BvMxIAzLuY/s400/tp522.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526517164715752258" />
photos ©2010 Tim Birch

Valencia, 9 October 2010

Watching the crew line-up for the TP52 Worlds was a bit like reporting on the America’s Cup, so many names and faces were familiar. And of course, the America’s Cup Port venue and the waters off Valencia played their part in supporting this feeling.

Paul Cayard was sailing aboard Artemis, the Swedish yacht helmed (yes, helmed) by businessman Torbjorn Tornquist. Jochen Schueman, the German Olympic sailor (and former skipper of Team Alinghi) was steering Audi/All4ONE, whilst Terry Hutchinson, tactician aboard Team New Zealand, took the helm of US entry Quantum Racing.

Thanks to a Franco/German alliance, no less than 8 nations were featured in the championship which, due to an unfortunate earlier incident, left host nation Spain without a representative. Their yacht Bribon was severely damaged in a collision with Audi/All4ONE and could not be repaired in time for the start of the regatta. Nevertheless, Valencia provided a welcome mix of weather conditions which saw Argentina’s yacht Matador going into the last day just 3.5 points behind Quantum Racing.

After a two-hour delay, a 6 – 8 knot easterly set in and racing got under way.
The Russian yacht Synergy, steered by Eugeni Neugodnikov showed good speed off the line heading left. Artemis had a fine start and headed right. When these two crossed, Synergy had to duck behind Artemis. Meanwhile Bigamist, the Portguese entry steered by Afonso Domingos, continued out to the right and crossed the fleet coming into the top mark. Matador was over the line early and had to tack back, giving Quantum Racing the perfect opportunity to watch their every move. Their aggressive covering held Matador down in seventh place going into the first downwind leg and only some tactical sailing allowed them to reel in the American yacht before they rounded the bottom mark. During the final beat, Quantum racing carried Matador far out to the right “almost to Ibiza” quipped one of the cameramen. They rounded the top mark eighth and ninth, both carrying protest flags and followed closely by the on-water judges.

Bigamist led the fleet home to claim her first win of the regatta, followed by Audi/All4ONE, Cristabella (the first British yacht), Artemis and Synergy.
As Quantum Racing crossed the line just behind Matador, Terry Hutchinson ordered the removal of their protest flag and the Argentines generously applauded their well-deserved victory. Just 2 points separated these boats after nine races. Just 1 point separated the next four yachts but Synergy had done enough to hold onto her 3rd overall.

1 Quantum Racing USA 31.5
2 Matador ARG 33.5
3 Synergy RUS 41
4 Artemis SWE 41
5 Audi/All4ONE GER/FRA 41.5
6 Cristabella GBR 42
7 Bigamist POR 51.5
8 Pace GBR 72
9 Weapon of Choice GBR 76.5

Mike O’Neillgooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-71244151190669959132010-07-17T17:43:00.002+02:002010-07-17T17:51:10.132+02:00Kasabian

Kasabian, originally uploaded by beadyeye.

Anita Darling and partner in crime PJ are at Heineken FIB Benicassim, reporting live with great pictures at flickr and tumblr and they're also tweeting livegooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-11877866188598878022010-06-28T18:35:00.003+02:002010-06-28T19:14:42.924+02:00What a weekend in ValenciaIt has been quite a weekend here in Valencia - The F1 Grand prix took place on the Valencia Street Circuit- loathed by aficionados but pronounced a triumph by Bernie Eccleston. It was a warm weekend, Sunday was a particularly hot day, apparently 3º hotter than last year and that was August!
Gay Pride had their annual parade in the city on Saturday night followed by a concert featuring mainly drag acts. We got to see the parade but after a day's sight seeing with visitors from the UK, a quiet dinner at home was the favoured choice, friends who did go said the concert was good but the atmosphere was great!
We met up with friends at the Guinness House to watch the England/Germany match - one of the friend's we were meeting texted ahead to say that Hamilton and Button had come second and third in the Grand Prix, a good omen- but I pointed out that a German had taken first place- not such a good omen.
We are just putting the finishing touches to two other big events this summer Fib Heineken Benicàssim - Our own Anita Darling will be there, this year in the company of ace photographer Pj; they'll be reporting on a daily basis on thisisvalencia and on thisisfib.tumblrand they'll be twittering too - so don't forget to follow!
La Tomatina takes place on the last wednesday August whis this year is the 25th, we ran a great luxury bus tour to this whacky food fight and we're taking bookings now clock on the headline for more info.gooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-69954490970037308012010-06-09T10:15:00.002+02:002010-06-09T10:23:05.628+02:00An Air show above the beach at Malvarossa, Valencia
Valencia hosts on 12th and 13th June, the VII City of Valencia International Air Show, a festival that, over the years, has gained a great reputation thanks to the skill of the participants and the setting over the beautiful Playa de la Malvarrosa beach.
At the six previous editions, some of the most representative figures from the world of national and international aeronautics in its different forms have taken part in this event. This latest edition features new spectacles for spectators and fans of aerial acrobatics.
Last year's show was a great hit with sailing aficionados, and this year boats will be allowed to moor at sea to enjoy the City of Valencia Air Show. Sailing enthusiasts will find the mooring plans from the Valencia's Royal Air Club webpage. http://www.realaeroclubvalencia.esgooruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-89637218038953734072010-06-06T17:35:00.001+02:002010-06-06T17:35:02.373+02:00WNBR at Puente de Flores in Valencia<div style="text-align: left; They are quite moving to watch and these are the biggest outside of Seville. There are also processions in Sagunto if you want to make a day of it and take in the Magnificent Roman Castle too.
Also down at the beach from the 9-11 April is the wonderfully colourful 13th edition of the annual Kite Festival - Great fun for all the family and free!
A few euros buys you vouchers that not only get you in to the Mostra de Vinos by the Calatrava Bridge in the Park Rio Turia, but also entitle you to wine tastings and food sampling.
