First, and most importantly, there was only one challenger. So the entire fun of many different countries racing for the right to race the defender was eliminated. We now have essentially two types of America's cups. This takes a lot out of the event. Imagine if the World Series (baseball) was a four-team single elimination match every five or six years, instead of a seven game series as it has been for the last 100 plus years.

Secondly, in choosing such exotic boats you run the risk of a blowout, which is what happened here. What we mostly saw was the Mr. Ellison's wonderful trimaran was faster on every point of sail, much faster.

When we raced in more standard designs (such as the 12 meter rule), which had been refined over decades, there was less room for technology to be the sole determination of victory.

The mega-multihulls are cetainly very exciting, but when you factor in things like $300 million dollar wing-masts you have really turned the sport into more of an engineering contest than a sailing contest. Perhaps it's not surprising that the head of one of the worlds largest engineering firms (software engineering, in the case of Oracle) now holds the trophy.

Mr. Ellison seems to have a sense of fair play, and I am very pleased with his comments post race. I hope he finds a better mix of technology and tradition for the next round.

My congratulations to Team BMW-Oracle for the victory, and to Team Alinghi for the well fought defense.Vlad Z.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06877578308529753862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-17436778896015196012009-08-11T11:10:12.468+02:002009-08-11T11:10:12.468+02:00I agree with your evaluation that Leonard Cohen is...I agree with your evaluation that Leonard Cohen is amazing, but I believe he will turn 75 rather than 71 this year. He must come to Spain more often. He tours very often in USA and even in other parts of Europe but he doesn't come to Spain very often. This is his second time in Spain. The first in 1992. Then he came in 1998 but he didn't give any concerts. He just appeared in a pair of Tv shows.josehttp://www.wadhoo.com/carolekingnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-56814516390156038472009-07-23T20:24:36.591+02:002009-07-23T20:24:36.591+02:00The TV screens didn't fall down. They'll have been lowered safely to prevent them falling down.

I'm with Martin on this. We camped through the winds. We made friends with people we wouldn't have met otherwise, helped people who needed a hand securing their tents, and generally got more into the festival spirit than anyone you'll ever meet at V Festival.

Oasis have had sound problems throughout their tour. It's a little too regular now for them to blame it on the festival, it's clearly either the band's gear, or them trying to gain publicity.

The wind and fire are hardly the festival's fault. Even if they had been as prepared as some people seem to think they should have been, there is no way the bands could have gone on with the amount of dust that was flying around the crowd.

The only thing that the festival organisers did to piss us off was start rescheduling bands without communicating it properly. It wouldn't have taken much to put big signs above the wristband check at the entrance saying "Friendly Fires will be on an hour early" etc...

Other than that, it was an amazing festival, and I can't wait for next year already.BenHnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-25433902476947408372009-07-23T12:49:38.005+02:002009-07-23T12:49:38.005+02:00Piss off back to v "festival" then Ross....Piss off back to v "festival" then Ross. The spirit in the campsite and the hard work of the organisers was enough to get this festival back on it's feet and going again saturday night, after a freak extreme weather situation. Any festival would of been shut down by that. Organised with the help of L'Amics de la Gaita (Friends of the Bagpipe) as a meeting of the music from the Atlantic/Cantabrian and the Mediterranean seas, the first hurriedly organised festival last year attracted an audience of over 1500. The main action takes place around Benimaclet and the Sherlock Holmes pub in Plaza Manises.

10db - DEU DIES DE BURJASSOT 7-17 May
This lovely festival returns to Burjassot for its fifth edition. Music, theatre, dance clowns and Jugglers: 36 performances throughout the ten days - 26 of them free. There is also an excellent medieval fair that winds through the plaza Ayuntamiento and up to the Patio. Absolutely not to be missed.gooruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14365797641413714400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20769600.post-55877966913257457532009-04-27T17:34:00.000+02:002009-04-27T17:34:00.000+02:00A book well worth reading.
